Slip Rate

A seismically active fault ruptures due to the accumulating strain within rocks near its rupture area. Slip rate measures the average displacement per unit of time (usually a year) on the fault surface and is a proxy to represent the long-term strain accumulation rate near the fault rupture area. A fault’s slip rate can be interpreted as its potential for creating earthquakes; see the definition of seismic moment.
